Sexy Walt’s Worm
Walt's Worm is a simple yet incredibly effective fly pattern, popular for trout fishing. It's an excellent pattern for beginners to learn and is highly versatile. This popular variation, the Sexy Walt’s Worm, adds some flash and a hot spot to the original pattern and is often tied on a jig hook. Here is a step-by-step guide to tying this essential fly.
Materials Needed
Hook: Hanak 450BL, size 10-16.
Bead: Slotted copper, 3.0-3.5mm
Thread: 6/0 or 8/0 classic waxed thread, red.
Body: Hare’s mask dubbing
Rib: Pearl flashabou
Weight: 0.3mm lead-free wire
Tying Instructions
1. Prepare the hook.
Slide the bead onto the hook with the small hole first.
2. Add the lead-free wire.
Make 8-10 wraps of lead-free wire, and push it up against the bead.
3. Start the thread.
Start the thread behind the wire, then lay down a smooth thread base. Make gentle, X-shaped wraps over the wire so that the thread doesn’t slip between the wraps.
4. Tie in the flashabou.
Secure a single strand of flashabou, and return the thread to the bend of the hook.
5. Dub the body.
Dub a tapered body of hare’s mask from the bend of the hook to the bead.
6. Rib the body.
Wrap the flashabou forward in relatively tight spirals until reaching the bead, then tie off.
7. Finish the fly
Build a small hot spot of red thread behind the bead, then whip finish, and add head cement to the thread.
