BWO Biot Jig Nymph
The BWO Biot Jig Nymph takes the simple, segmented beauty of the classic pattern and gives it a functional, modern upgrade, tied on a jig hook. This fly is a must-have in your fly box for targeting picky trout using tight line nymphing techniques.
Materials List
Hook: Hanak 450BL, size 16 or 18
Bead: 2.8mm or 3.0mm Slotted Tungsten Bead, Copper
Thread: 8/0, Olive
Tail: Coq de Leon or Pheasant Tail Fibers
Abdomen: Olive Goose or Turkey Biot
Thorax: BWO or Olive Dubbing
Step-by-Step Tying Instructions
Step 1: Mount the Bead and Hook
Start by sliding the slotted tungsten bead onto the hook. The hook will pass through the narrow side of the slot, with the wider, open side of the slot facing the hook point. Mount the hook in your vise and slide the bead forward until it sits snugly against the hook eye.
Step 2: Start the Thread and Secure the Bead
Start your thread directly behind the tungsten bead and build up a small dam of thread. This will prevent the bead from sliding back on the hook shank while you tie the rest of the fly. Wrap the thread back to the hook bend.
Step 3: Tie in the Tail
Select three to five Coq de Leon fibers. Tie them in at the bend of the hook with a few wraps, creating a tail that is about the length of the hook shank. Trim the excess fibers.
Step 4: Tie in the Biot
Tie in an olive goose biot by its tip, with the shiny, concave side facing you. Wrap your thread forward to the base of the thorax (about one-third of the way back from the bead).
Step 5: Form the Abdomen
Wrap the biot forward in slightly overlapping turns, making sure to keep the shiny, ridged side facing out. Stop wrapping at the base of the thorax. Secure the biot with your thread and trim the excess.
Step 6: Dub the Thorax and Finish the Fly
Dub a thin noodle of BWO or olive dubbing onto your thread. Build a tapered thorax just behind the bead. Then, build a small head with your thread behind the bead, whip finish, and trim the excess.
Fishing the BWO Biot Jig Nymph
The beauty of this fly is its functionality. The Hanak 450BL jig hook, combined with a heavy tungsten bead, ensures the fly sinks fast and gets to the strike zone quickly. It’s perfect for tight-line nymphing in faster currents and pocket water. This fly is a true workhorse.
